Primal Vegetable Recipes

Breakfast

Since toast, cereal, oatmeal, muffins, danish pastry, pancakes, french toast, are off limits, what do we eat for breakfast? Are eggs and bacon all we can eat? It's fine to eat left-over dinner for breakfast, but in the morning I just don't want chicken or steak. These recipes provide our more traditional breakfast food while still following the primal food recommendations.

Vegetables

An important part of the Primal Diet is eating all kinds of vegetables; in season, locally grown, organic vegetables are best. When you pick up a box of vegetables from your CSA or farmer's market and don't know how to prepare them, check here for some ideas.  Several recipes are included for each vegetable and as I come across more I'll be adding them. If you have a favorite, please let me know.  Don't forget to search your cookbooks for vegetable recipes...you don't have to use "primal cookbooks."

(I have not made all of these. Some recipes were copied from non-primal websites, so you might see flour or sugar mentioned in a few; try to eliminate the bad ingredient or substitute with primal ingredients. For example: use almond flour instead of flour and use a bit of honey in place of sugar.)

Casseroles

Most of the casseroles I used to make have too much pasta or flour-based cheese sauces. As I can adapt recipes, or as I find new ones that use primal-approved ingredients, I will post them here.

Grain-Free Breads

I don't recommend making grain-free "bread" in your everyday meals because I think it will just cause you to desire wheat bread...however, it's probably ok to enjoy them occasionally. Recipes include:
  • Basic Crepes
  • Lemon Cranberry Muffins
  • Fruit Muffins
  • Cheese Biscuits
  • Orange Cranberry Scones
  • Shortcake
  • Waffles and Pancakes

Primal Desserts

I think desserts should be for special meals, not every day. Even if you use a "healthy" sweetener, eating it too much causes you to desire sweet food and might make the unhealthy desserts harder to resist. There seems to be a lot of confusion, too, over which non-sugar sweeteners are safe.  Here are some desserts ideas that are sort of ok, to be eaten rarely!
  • Sauteed Pears
  • Chocolate Parfait
  • Cherry Pie Truffles
  • Chocolate Candy
  • Lava Cake

Please note: I’m passing along information that I think is useful, some of which has been helpful to me personally. I’m not offering health care, and I’m not qualified to do so. If you are considering a dietary, exercise, or other lifestyle change, it’s a good idea to check in with a doctor or other health professional for support.
