Paleo Popularity

Maybe I spend way too much time clicking on random internet links but I am finding a lot of paleo websites around the web.  Most of them are well designed, with articles and plenty of recipes. The reason there are so many websites is probably because people want to share the good health results they are experiencing.

The more primal/paleo/ancestral/real food websites there are, the more people will hear and learn about the benefits of eating Real Food!

Farmer's Markets are becoming more popular as more and more people want to buy real food grown locally, (frequently without chemicals). There's been a huge growth in the number of farmer's markets around the country in the past few years.

(One thing I am waiting to see is a "Paleo Approved" label on a box of cereal! Haha just kidding... Seriously, it could happen if this movement gets bigger. The food industry won't be left out. That's another topic though.)

Out of curiosity, I clicked on four paleo websites to see how they answer "What is Paleo?" and "Why Eat Paleo?"

What is the Paleo Diet? from PrimalPalate.com
The Paleo diet is based upon the idea of eating the foods our bodies were designed for... These foods were available to early people through hunting and gathering [meat and fish, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables]. During modern times, advances in technology have made other forms of food available for consumption [grains, dairy, and processed foods], which are suboptimal forms of nutrition. The foods recommended in the Paleo diet provide our bodies with long-lasting energy that also aid in burning fat.

Now how do we (personally) define paleo in our lives? Quite simply: we eat real food. To quote Robb Wolf, our protein sources had a soul and a face, our carbs come from things that we could pluck out of our garden and eat, and we love fat. “But what does all that really mean?” you may ask. Most of our day-to-day eating involves:

  • Protein, in the form of lean meats, poultry, seafood, and things we (or others) could hunt/catch/spear.
  • Carbohydrates in the form of vegetables and some fruit. Lots and lots of colorful, nutritious vegetables.
  • Fats, in the form of coconut oil or coconut milk, nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, clarified butter.
  • All kinds of herbs and spices.
What we don’t eat:
  • Gluten/grains
  • Legumes
  • Dairy
Food is a lot like religion, in that it becomes very personal to people, and there are those who love nothing more than to tell you what you are doing is wrong for reasons x, y or z. For us, we know we feel good eating this way, we are healthier inside and out eating this way, and it works in our life. We know there are other “believers” for whom that is true as well. We know there are others who think this paleo thing is some fad, we’re going to decimate the world’s fish/cow/chicken supplies, and that veganism is the way to go. That’s their choice. This is ours.

What is Paleo? from EverydayPaleo.com
Eating paleo refers to eating as our ancestors once did, prior to modern day agriculture. We are genetically designed to eat lean meats, vegetables, some fruit, a little bit of starch and good fats. By removing processed foods from our diets, including grains – especially those that contain gluten – one can protect him or herself from a myriad of modern day illnesses from obesity to heart disease and diabetes to cancer.
Why does eating paleo work and not a standard American diet? The standard American diet stresses the importance of eating a high-carbohydrate low-fat diet; this approach to eating only leads to diseases such as type II diabetes, obesity, depression, and the list goes on and on… Also, grains – especially whole grains which contain gluten such as wheat and barley – are proven gut irritants. Eating paleo has helped hundreds of thousands reverse disease, lose weight, and feel an overall sense of heath and wellness. Try eating paleo for 30 days and see if YOU look, feel and perform better!
